David Wegehaupt received his bachelor’s degree in music performance from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he graduated summa cum laude. Following a year in Paris on a Fulbright study grant, he earned a master’s degree in music performance at Arizona State University.
From 2009 to 2014, Wegehaupt was part of MIM’s curatorial team, working primarily on exhibit content for the United States / Canada, Europe, and Artist Galleries. After pursuing opportunities as a freelance saxophonist for three years, Wegehaupt returned to MIM’s curatorial team in May 2017, where he now assists Dr. Richard Walter with the responsibilities for the United States / Canada and Europe collections and exhibits.
Wegehaupt’s musical background includes extensive performance experience and research in Western classical music, jazz, free improvisation, and American popular music. He performs widely as a soloist and chamber musician and gives master classes and lectures at universities across the country. He is passionate about commissioning new works for saxophone from emerging and established composers. He is increasingly active as an improviser and has appeared as a guest saxophonist with many of the leading contemporary classical music ensembles in the United States.
