The English Beat rushed onto the music scene in 1979, during a time of massive social, political, and musical upheaval. The stage was set for a period of unbridled musical creativity, and the Beat made their voices heard on classic hits such as “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “I Confess,” and “Save It for Later,” singing about issues facing youth culture and universal matters of the heart and soul. The band fluidly crossed between soul, reggae, pop, and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created infectious dance rhythms.

The Beat first came to prominence as founding members of the British two-tone ska movement; their classic first album, I Just Can’t Stop It, fit squarely in that genre. Along with contemporaries such as the Specials, the Selecter, and Madness, the band grew to be one of the most popular and influential bands in British two-tone. The Beat evolved from there and continues to tour regularly behind its eclectic blend of pop, R&B, and Jamaican rhythms.
