Performance: Phoenix Jazz Girls Rising 12:30 p.m., Sunday North El Río Phoenix Jazz Girls Rising is an educational program for girls ages 10–18 led by saxophonist Mary Petrich and pianist Claudia Bloom. Its mission is to inspire and promote young women as players and performers of jazz, America’s original musical art form.
Performance: We3 & Sheila Earley 12:30 p.m., Saturday 3:15 p.m., Sunday North El Río Celebrate jazz vocalists Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and others, as well as some of jazz’s great female drummers, such as Pauline Braddy and Viola Smith, in this 45-minute performance from We3 and drummer Sheila Earley.
Performance: Diana Lee 1:30 p.m., Saturday North El Río Hear a performance by local jazz and R&B vocalist Diana Lee, who has performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, and many more.
Workshop: Scat Singing 2:30–3:00 p.m., Saturday Event Room 2 Scat singing is a vocal improvisation technique using the voice and wordless syllables to imitate an instrument. Put your scat singing talent to the test at this workshop, led by Diana Lee.
Performance: Phoenix Women Jazz Collective 3:15 p.m., Saturday North El Río The Phoenix Women Jazz Collective draws from the Valley’s elite jazz players, composers, and arrangers. Enjoy this performance of works by famous and lesser-known female composers, including such giants as Mary Lou Williams, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Roxy Coss, and Joni Mitchell.
