Signature Events establish MIM as a center of culture and community by introducing guests to the museum and its collection through family-friendly events such as Experience Cultural Programs, holiday offerings, events honoring musical icons, special exhibition programs, and more.
These one-of-a-kind events immerse guests in diverse music and cultures from around the globe. With each one focused on a different country or geographic region, guests experience live musical and dance performances, hands-on activities, and more!

All Signature Events are included with paid museum admission and free for members.
MUSICAL ICON: RAVI SHANKAR

Join MIM in honoring the legacy of Pandit Ravi Shankar, a musical luminary and singular figure in the transmission of Indian classical music and the sitar to the Western world. Shankar’s impression on the west was inescapable throughout the twentieth-century and could be heard everywhere from the concert stage with the London Symphony Orchestra to pop music recordings by The Beatles, whose fame helped bring further international attention to Indian music and culture, and Shankar himself. Gain a deeper appreciation of this remarkable musician through hands-on activities, discussions, film screenings, and performances. During your visit, be sure to include a trip to MIM’s Artist Gallery, where two of Ravi Shankar’s sitars are on display.

The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon showcases the dramatic transformation of popular culture brought about by the electrically amplified guitar. From earliest imagination to musical revolution, these are the instruments that electrified the world. Go behind the scenes of this unique exhibition with special guests who will mark the occasion with engaging talks and demonstrations, revealing why the electric guitar made history nearly ninety years ago and still captures our attention today.
