This year, the Phoenix Boys Choir is celebrating seventy years of musical excellence, providing the highest level of musical education to boys all over the Valley of the Sun. For the last twenty years, the choir has added the Masters of the Phoenix Boys Choir, an ensemble of changed voices consisting solely of graduates of the choir. Aside from maintaining its own concert schedule, this ensemble has contributed significantly to the overall performances of the choir by offering the possibility to explore the traditional mixed-choir repertoire as well as showing the talented boys that there is singing after their voice changes.
In this performance, the Masters will showcase music from America’s past, featuring songs by Stephen Foster as well as spirituals and gospel songs. In addition, the group will explore music from different centuries written or arranged for male voices. They will pay tribute to the late composer Leonard Cohen by presenting his “Hallelujah” and showcase a variety of love songs, such as “Georgia on My Mind” and “Surfer Girl.” They will also present “Geographical Fugue,” an avant-garde piece by Ernst Toch. This is sure to be an enjoyable and entertaining evening with music for every taste.
